pimlico's Diaryland Diary

dry your eyes darlin' it's ok - meet me on the dual carriageway

For all my whining on Friday, I have to say that I throughly enjoyed my hectic weekend. Here's what happened:
* Friday - We got tickets to see an episode of The IT Crowd being recorded. I've never been part of a studio audience before. It was slightly odd having to laugh at re-takes, but the bits we saw being filmed (plus the location stuff they showed us on big TV screens) were very funny indeed. The show was written and directed by Graham Linehan (partly responsible for Father Ted and Black Books), who asked us to all get up and "stretch our legs" when the shoot went into it's second hour. Bless! He looks like a bemused bear.

* Saturday - A trip to London Zoo with a couple of friends. It was great fun behaving like a large child. We got see otters, penguins, meerkats, marmosets ("They look like little punk men!", my mate exclaimed to everyone's amusement) and bats. And a Diana monkey showed us his ball-bags. As my mate observed "It's what she would have wanted."

The comedy highlight of the day involved witness the stately, dignified okapi* behaving in a not-at-all stately and dignified manner. The male chased the female around the paddock, but she was more interested in eating her tea than getting jiggy. Cue the male trying to persuade her with a tap on the behind and a plaintive cry of "Errrrggh!" A scene that is played out towards the end of the evening (possibly with roles reversed)in living rooms the world over on a nightly basis. Possibly.

* Saturday (again) - We hit our favourite "nite spot" and danced like fools**. It was fun, even though I've realised that I'm now so old that I've started to sneer at students. I can only get grumpier. Give me a couple of years and I will be like Oscar the Grouch. Only not living in a bin.

* Sunday - Went to see The Lives of Others. It made me very glad that I don't have to live under such a horrible oppresive regime. Plus, there were the odd flashes of dark, Germanic humour. Which made it seem all the more real. A knockabout farce featuring bumbling Stasi Officers falling over and breaking their recording equipment cannot be too far behind. Or maybe it has already happened. I'm not too familiar with German cinema, but this film made me kind of wish that I was.

* Sunday - The day ended with a pleasant few hours in the pub. I went home feeling all fizzy and fuzzy.

* Monday (I had the day off, so it counts). I did nowt. Apart from a bit of writing. And watch Phantom of the Paradise, which is completely bonkers. It's a glam rock musical based on bits of Phantom of the Opera, Faust and Frankenstein directed by split screen lover and casual misogynist Brian De Palma. Based on the number of fan sites I found earlier, it seems to have a bit of a cult following. And was supposed to a satire, apparently.

How come nobody writes rock operas these days? Many a boring band would be improved if they wore velvet capes and wrote "pop cantatas", as the composer in the film calls his.

Tonight sees me do stand-up comedy # 9. I am terrified. And wondering if it is acceptable to say, "Baby Jesus taking some lepers bowling". There is a context. Honest.

* They're sort of a cross between a giraffe (minus the long neck) and a zebra. I have no idea if the plural is "okapi" or "okapis". Anyway, London Zoo has two of them.

**We also discovered that it is possible to work the okapi noise into various famous indie songs. This works especially well with "This Charming Man" as "Da na na na na na na" can be changed so easily into "Da na na na na na ERRRRGGH".
